Do I need a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer?

The Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer
I grappled with this question for about a minute.  I realized with 1 appliance I can:
  • easily and quickly make homemade fresh pastas
  • make bread doughs for homemade bread, cinnamon rolls
  • grind my own meats for burgers, sausages, meatloaf, etc.
  • make homemade icecream of customized flavors for hot summer days
  • mix cookie doughs around the holidays saving tons of time so I could bake many different types of cookies and still have time for the gym.
  • make meringues for pies, cookies and other desserts (although my macaroons are still an epic fail)
  • make fantastic whipped cheese mashed potatoes without a potato masher
  • whip half and half for whipped cream is so much better than cool whip on fruit, hot chocolate, pies, cakes, sundaes, etc.
  • Use as a food processor
  • Can also, mill grains, and juice although I have not done this
So yes.  I had to have one.  Other than a stove/oven, this really is THE appliance for the kitchen.

Colors
Unlike other appliances that come in chrome, black, or sometimes that cherry red color, there are an array of rainbow options for this appliance.  I went with the classic brushed chrome.

Size (quarts)
Remember, size matters.  When Kitchen Aid Mixer owners talk about this, they try to one up each other with the size.  Get the 5 Quart.  Trust me, you will use it.

Motor
The five quart has a bigger motor.  See above.

Price research
It seems expensive.  But this will be the only mixer you will EVER have to buy so its a steal.  Not to mention all of the other stuff it can do so it is a total value.

I can tell you the best all around deal I found a few years ago was on Amazon.com.  They offer new and used ones.  I got a new one, but the used ones probably work pretty good, too.  Believe it or not, the best price was NOT the post holiday sales in January that had the best deals.  It was Mother's Day in May.  So, I celebrated Mother's day about a decade early and got myself this nifty stand mixer.  My future kid will appreciate this because by the time they come along, I will be able to bake the best darn cookies ever.

If you are already a mom, pressure your kids and husband to get you one of these, you work hard and have earned it.  Seriously.  Even if you do not think so.  Dads if your wife does not have one of these, get her one.  If she likes to cook, she will probably cry.

The Pasta Maker Attachment

I had dreams of making my own fresh pasta.  Seriously.  The pasta maker attachment easily screws on to the front of the Kitchen Aid mixer.  Then, the pasta dough is made into small balls and put inside of the attachment.  The dough comes out of the bottom where it is pushed through the silver disk with the pasta shape (note I have the pasta maker upside down in this picture so you can see how the pasta shape disks attach).  This machine can make six different pasta shapes by switching out the silver disks.  Yes, that is the original box in the background.

The pasta maker is about $150.00, which not gonna lie, I choked when I saw the price tag for my dream (making fresh pasta remember?).  However, I have no idea how else to make fresh pasta noodles and I can't imagine trying to roll them by hand or cut them by hand.  Would that even work???

Amazon.com is about the best price anywhere:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GWZ9ZK/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=jamsdha-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003GWZ9ZK

There is also a pasta roller attachment sold as a seperate piece:
